I have been (and let me state for the record, I continue to be) a big fan of SmugMug.
My initial thoughts on the new SmugMug Platform are generally positive, however there are a few niggles and “Gotchas” (to use the SmugMug term) which are annoying.
Before I start….. their help service is excellent, the new themes look incredible and overall the switch has been worth the effort.
However, my initial feelings are that it is more difficult to customise the new platform without delving into HTML and CSS (declaration – with only about 90 minutes of “playing” with the new customisation options).
Today I switched my Professional & Public Portfolio to the new platform but decided to keep my Family Photos on the old platform for now. I had initially tried this on the day the new platform had launched but had found that my hidden galleries were not displaying on the new platform and so abandoned the switch.
Today there were no such problems but once I had chosen a theme from the new list it became apparent that all of my old customisations were lost (Navigation, Custom CSS etc). That’s when the problems began. I had assumed that I could simply copy my old CSS/HTML customisations over but apparently that is not possible.
My customisation requirements are, it has to be said, very basic. I need the SmugMug elements of my site to approximately match the overall look of the mssp.com website (a WordPress site). An exact match could of course be done (either on the old or, I’m sure, the new platform) using Custom CSS, however my time is limited, my life will be short and I prefer taking photos over developing websites.
Many of the tasks that were previously very easily done using the Easy Customiser now require (I believe) Custom CSS and HTML. Some examples….
1. On the old platform I could control the Hover Colour using Easy Customiser. On the new platform this option does not appear to be available. I assume I need to use CSS.
2. On the old platform it was possible to align your Logo and your navigation whereas again this is not as easy on the new platform as the site is divided into different “blocks”.
3. The footer section of the website is not as easy to customise on the new platform as it was previously. Even making your text align to the centre is more complicated than before.
My Private Photos are still on the old platform…..
My Portfolio is on the new platform…..
Doubtless these teething issues will be resolved shortly or alternatively somebody will contact me to point out that I am talking rubbish.
I still remain a huge fan of SmugMug 🙂
